When the Green varsity and JV girls’ soccer teams meet the Hoban Lady Knights’ on Saturday, Sept.
5 at Green Memorial Stadium, there will be excellent competition on the field. Last year’s inaugural event was held in honor of Shawn Basone, wife of Green Soccer coach, Jeff Basone. This year, those involved are working to continue to increase their contribution in Shawn’s memory, as she passed away after a long battle with cancer. The day begins at 11 a.m. with the JV game, and will continue most of the day with fund-raising events and family fun. The varsity game kicks off at 3 p,m., but all are invited to stay after the game for tailgating and even on into the evening when the boys’ teams play. The members of the Green Youth Soccer Association, as well as the Green and Hoban players and their parents, have been hard at work earning money for this year’s charity, cancer hospice. Before and during the event, there will be raffle tickets for sale for a pink Netbook, coach purses and many surprise items. Youth teams are doing their part by planning fundraising of their own for the cause, including bake sale items, handmade jewelry and more. “Take a Shot on Goal” is back, an event which was a favorite last year. During this event, anyone can take a shot on goal for a dollar and win a chance for a pink iPod. The youth teams are also looking forward to their fun competition for the most-spirited team. Event T-shirts, with proceeds benefitting the charity, can be ordered online at www.greensoccer.org and a limited supply of T-shirts will be available for sale the day of the event.
Game tickets will be for sale at the gate at regular high school admission prices, however a portion of each sale will be donated to the charity. Additional information can be found on the Green Soccer website at www.greensoccer.org.
