Greenwood sings at Gulf Coast Gala to support the arts

As a musician, Lee Greenwood knows the importance of the arts.
That’s why tonight he is performing at the sixth annual Gulf Coast Gala. In a phone interview earlier this month from Nashville, Tenn., the country music legend said he does 10-15 charity events a year, getting fans to contribute to good causes. “I think they need to bring in a name to attract an audience for these types of things,” Greenwood said. “I hope to do that, and I hope they make a lot of money.” Greenwood serves on the National Council on the Arts, which advises the National Endowment for the Arts on grants, funding guidelines and other decisions. The Gulf Coast Gala debuted in 2004 as a way to benefit cultural and visual arts at the Museum of the Gulf Coast, and to provide support for the college’s “Discovery” youth program, alumni fund, athletic scholarships, musical and theatrical productions and a variety of special projects, such as Lamar State’s July 4 celebration and the Regional Citizen Bee. The black-tie event begins at 6 tonight with a reception dinner is at 7 p.m. Greenwood will perform after the meal.
He said attendees can expect to hear all of his hits, including “God Bless the USA.”
