Guatemala Charity Walk Shines Despite The Rain 2009: Despite Sundays

Guatemala charity walk shines despite the rain

DESPITE Sunday’s continuous rain, more than 100 people of all ages took part in a charity walk/run/cycle, from Dingle to Ventry in aid of
Hope Guatemala. They registered in McCarthy’s Bar on Upper Main Street and assembled outside in the rain. But despite the miserable conditions the crowd was in jovial mood. And a surprising number of youngsters turned up for the event, many of them on bikes. This annual event raises funding for projects in the indigenous Mayan community of Raxnam, in the highlands of Guatemala. Over the past year some 40 essential water storage tanks have been provided for families and it is planned to construct 60 more. There is no local water source in the village and these tanks collect water in the rainy season. Organiser Eddy Dieckmann was more than pleased with the turnout. “It’s wonderful to see so many children here. Last year we raised &euro6,000 and I’ll be very happy if we collect &euro5,000 this year,” he said. The runners were the first to go in the 10k event and they were followed by cyclists and walkers. The route took them along the high road to Ventry, ending at P&aacuteid
