Hernando Today Vendor booths available for Health Fair Vendor booths are available for the fifth annual Hernando County Health Fair to be held from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582 located at 14494 Cortez Blvd. Interior booths are available at a cost of $135 and a limited number of outside booths are available at a cost of $110. The event has drawn as many as 2,000 participants in the past. Complimentary samples of signature items from local food establishments will be featured, and live music and entertainment will be provided free of charge. Health care businesses share information, give demonstrations and provide free health screenings for the community. In addition, flu and pneumonia shots will be available at a cost of $30 for a flu vaccine and $45 for a pneumonia vaccine. The flu vaccine is for seasonal flu, not swine flu. For more information, call Denise at 352-544-5206. Oak Hill to offer prostate cancer screenings Oak Hill Hospital will offer free prostate cancer screenings in September. The screening will consist of two parts: Part one will be a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood draw which will be offered Aug. 31 through Sept. 11 at the hospital’s ExpressLab from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday (closed from noon to 1 p.m. daily and also on Labor Day) Part two will be a physician digital rectal exam (DRE). Both the PSA and DRE are required to participate. The physician DRE will be conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 22, by appointment only. DRE appointments will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis now through Sunday, Aug. 30, by calling 352-597-6333. ‘Conquering Cocaine’ seminar to be presented Sept. 2
BROOKSVILLE “Conquering Cocaine” will be presented on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Spring Lake Community Center located at 4184 Spring Lake Highway, across from Spring Lake United Methodist Church. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m., and the seminar will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Guest speaker will be Spero G. Alexio, MSW. Topics will be meditation, the brain, cocaine, darkness, prostitution, John Belushi, Sherlock Holmes, Christ, and Sigmund Freud. A discussion will be conducted about the treatment of cocaine addiction, featuring a treatment approach that includes spirituality, brain chemistry, psychology and meditation.
