CINCINNATI – People rallied their strength downtown to climb 45 floors and more than 1,000 steps to the top of Carew Tower.
It was all part of the Cincinnati chapter of the American Lung Association’s “Climb the Carew†fundraiser. Carew Tower’s lobby was packed with people who wanted their shot at the climb. North College Hill firefighter Ryan Braun made the journey in his full uniform, complete with rescue gear. “It’s about 60 pounds of gear, so we’ll see how it goes,†Braun said. “It shows firefighter fitness and also what our job entitles us to do.” An elite group of 18 people took the challenge not one step, but several hundred steps, further by doing the so-called “Vertical Mile.†That means they did the entire journey — up and down the tower — 10 times.
Alan Willey made the mile in just more than two hours.
