MIDDLETOWN &mdash A Memorial Day weekend event is picking up speed as the Darrell Hunter Community Days draw near.
An annual breast cancer awareness and community pride walk, youth football camp and two basketball competitions are set for this weekend, Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, at Douglass Park in Middletown. “I’m happy about the space that we’re in right now,” said organizer Kelven Moss, account executive for the Darrell Hunter Organization. Moss said about 75 youth had signed up so far for the football camp run by former Middie three-sport athlete, who is in his first year with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League. He previously played with NFL teams Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints after leaving the Miami University RedHawks. Moss said his phone has been ringing off the hook with residents asking to play or coach in Sunday’s community basketball game at Rosa Parks Elementary School. Middletown school personnel will play a game against familiar faces in the community at 3 p.m. Community players include policemen, higher education professionals and others who have inspired Hunter and Moss growing up in Middletown. At 4 p.m., current Middies will play former Middies during a charity game. Canned goods will cover admission, which will benefit the Louella Thompson Dream Center.
