CHARLOTTE, N.C.
— He brings you the weather every day. He’s a regular at charity events. And he’s known for cutting up. For 37 years, Larry Sprinkle has been a staple on TV and radio in Charlotte. But the very public Larry is actually a very private person. So, I set out to find out more about that side of him. First up, we’ll just get his out of the way. Larry says, “Yes, it’s my real name! Larry Sprinkle is my real name. I’m going to get a T-shirt. You open it up, it’s like Superman. It says, ‘Larry Sprinkle is my real name.'” Larry’s broadcasting career started accidentally in Rutherford County, N.C. He was just 14 years old. “Basically they needed a janitor. So my mother would take me every day after school to the radio station and I emptied trash,” says Larry. Six months into the job he happened to be in the studio when a record ended. There was no deejay in the booth.
“So I walked over and turned the mic on, ‘Uh, this is Larry.’ My voice got higher and higher. It was almost like I was talking on helium. I turned the mic off and went, ‘Oh gosh,’ and put another record on,” says Larry.
