Joe Huber Still Helps Crusade 2009: Death Joe

Joe Huber still helps Crusade

A little more than a year after his death, Joe Huber is still giving to his favorite charity, the WHAS Crusade for Children.
His family partnered with the Crusade to play host to the first Joe Huber Memorial Concert on Sunday at the Joe Huber Family Farm & Restaurant in Starlight, Ind. The pick-your-own farm operation Huber and his wife, Bonnie, started about 40 years ago and the restaurant they opened about 25 years ago have grown into community fixtures, a destination for locals and tourists alike. “It’s such a great crowd that came out,” Crusade President Dawn Lee said of the event, which drew 350 to 400 people by 3 p.m., an hour into its scheduled four-hour run. “I think everybody was wondering what kind of response we would get, and you can see how many people loved Joe Huber and we’re just tickled to be a part of that.” Kim Huber Kaiser, president of Joe Huber Restaurant Inc. and one of five of Huber’s children, said the concert/fundraiser featuring oldies band and local favorite The Marlins was the perfect way to honor her father. Visitors to Barn No. 1 at the restaurant could donate by giving money to members of the Lafayette Township Volunteer Fire Department, who were on hand to collect, or by purchasing engraved bricks to be placed in the Joe Huber Memorial Garden adjacent to the restaurant. “The Crusade was dad’s favorite charity, he loved The Marlins, he was passionate about his farm, so we could just think of no better way to honor him &hellip than to give people the opportunity to contribute to the Crusade,” Kaiser said.
Lee and Crusade Vice President John Blim said donations at the event were “really great” and sales of the memorial bricks &mdash at $100, $250 or $500 apiece, depending on the size &mdash also were going well.
