Missions and fun went hand in hand at St.
Matthews Lutheran Church recently. On May 8, Ladies NIght Out took place at the church thanks to the men of the parish, who have established a tradition for the past several years of making this an extra special evening for the more than 100 women of all ages in attendance. This year’s theme was “Italian” with the men cooking, serving and cleaning up after a delicious meal of penne, meatballs, chicken, salad and ice cream sundaes. The evening was much more than a Roman extravaganza. Through a free-will offering from guests, the church was able to raise more than $1,200 for Gifts from the Heart, an aid program established through the global organization, Lutheran World Action. As a result, money will be raised to purchase two cows and a plough, eight goats, chickens, fruit trees and four sacks of seed potatoes for impoverished families in third world communities. Gifts from the Heart is in keeping with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada’s official vision theme of being, “A Church in Mission for Others.”
