ANDOVER TOWNSHIP — The township committee put off finalizing its budget until after the primary election.
After failing to adopt its proposed $7.6 million budget, 3-2, April 27, the 47-cent increase per $1,000 of assessed value had been shaved again to a 45-cent increase by Monday night’s meeting, yet no vote was taken, and the committee will mull an amended spending plan anew at its June 8 meeting. Cost-saving options including a four-day work week for employees, unpaid furloughs, and eliminating street lights, said Mayor Bob Smith. Youth group will put on talent festival The free event will be preceded by a dedication ceremony for the new Nicholson Pavilion, located in Dykstra Park. Approximately 30 groups and individual youngsters will be performing at this event, which will raise money for Water is Life, a project operated by Hands on the World Global, which gives schools in South Africa access to clean drinking water. The charity is operated by a local citizen, Rachael Paulson. The local youngsters performing in the show represent a variety of different talent. In addition to the varied talent at this show, the Sparta Jazz Band will be present for the entire performance.
“This entire project is a testament to the Youth of Sparta that this event will be taking place,” said Sparta Mayor Brian Brady. “The entire community of Sparta is invited to share this event with our youngsters.”
