Local tennis Pro Stockton participating at eighth Mediterra Cup

Tennis professional Dick Stockton, at one time ranked No.
8 in the world, will be involved in the eighth annual Mediterra Cup. The event, to be held Saturday, Feb. 21 at The Sports Club at Mediterra in North Naples, will include a mixed doubles exhibition match including Stockton, Frank Swope, Mediterra’s director of tennis and fitness, Marnie Codrey, Mediterra tennis professional and other local tennis professionals. The 12:30 p.m. exhibition is open to the public. During his 13-year career, Stockton won eight singles and 16 doubles titles. A two-time Grand Slam titleholder, he won the U.S. Open mixed doubles with Rosie Casals in 1975 and the French Open mixed doubles with Anne Smith in 1984. He was also in the mixed doubles finals at Wimbledon in 1976. Stockton continued to win matches while playing the senior tour. “Dick is not only an astonishing tennis player, but also a well-respected coach,” said Swope. “He’s just such a great player and teacher, and exciting to watch play the game.” There is no cost to attend the exhibition, however seating is limited. The 2009 City of Marco Island Tennis & Racquetball Championships loom March 6-8 at the Racquet Center on the island. Play will be men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
