Maple Park Principal Takes Hit For Good Cause 2009: Maple Park

Maple Park principal takes hit for good cause

Maple Park Academy in Harwood Heights raised more than $450 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Funds were collected through a bake sale, ice cream sundae sale, Valentine’s gift basket raffle and the finale: throwing a whipped cream pie at Principal Hans Schuller. The students raised $450 as of Feb. 12 before the finale. For students, raising money for charity is a service learning project to learn empathy skills and give back to the community, according to Schuller. “Besides being a great cause, this is near and dear to my heart. I have had three close family members with NH lymphoma,” said school secretary Pam Laino, who suggested the school raise money for this charity.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients is a three-week-long event. The class that raises the most money receives lunch catered from the Olive Garden. It’s Maple Park Academy’s second year participating.
