NAACP’s Houston Branch Celebrates In Style 2009: Joining Naacp

NAACP’s Houston Branch celebrates in style

Joining the NAACP Houston Branch festivities in honor of the national organization’s 100th anniversary were Gene Locke, from left, NAACP board chair Carol Mims
Galloway, NAACP executive director Yolanda Smith and Artee T. Jones. The house was packed for the NAACP centennial celebration last week honoring six local leaders. Every square inch of the auto dealership was filled with supporters who had come to honor Zinetta Burney , Howard Jefferson , the Rev. Bill Lawson , Ernest McGowen Sr , Quentin Mease and Hazel Young . The 103-year-old Young brought the house down with her animated, lengthy remarks that began with, “You know, I like to talk.” Joining in the awards program were NAACP Houston Branch board chair Carol Mims Galloway , NAACP executive director Yolanda Smith and KROI-FM (92.1) personality Larry Jones . George R. Brown Convention Center chef Edward de la Garza , affectionately known as Chef Ed, is whipping up crème de menthe anglaise made from Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies for tonight’s “Just Desserts” event put on by the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council at La Colombe d’Or. Chefs from across the city are transforming Girl Scout cookies of all varieties into yummy desserts for the evening thanking Girl Scout donors. It’s a double treat for de la Garza and the convention center, which has booked the Girl Scouts of the USA national convention for 2011. Scheduled to celebrate that fact tonight at “Just Desserts” are convention center sales director Art Zehnder and senior national sales manager Beverly Peterson . They will be joined by local Girl Scout leaders as well as Girl Scouts of the USA director of national meetings Lois Blankstein and national meeting logistics manager Yvis Rosario . Joyce Uchenna Agu , the winning team from Season 7 of CBS’ The Amazing Race , are just back from a Valentine’s weekend in New York, where they partied with Houston transplants Lucinda Javier Loya . The highlight of the visit was a concert in Radio City Music Hall starring Anita Baker
The Agus are back on the tube with their local version of reality TV, The Great Raise . The two-part show debuts 7-9 p.m. Saturday on KHOU (Channel 11). Ten teams, including Cindi Rose with Erica Rose and Wayne Dolezal with Anna Rocha , compete while raising money for charity.
