“The sport of lacrosse, which is interwoven in the fabric of the Long Island community, represents a large network of caring people, and the
Town is pleased to work with them to achieve their many worthwhile goals,” said Supervisor Venditto, who will have the honor of dropping the ceremonial first ball at the College Lacrosse North-South Showdown on March 7. “The Town of Oyster Bay Lacrosse League has more than 80 participating teams, and we’re proud to support them with outstanding facilities and assistance.” Supervisor Venditto said the collegiate game will also serve as a fine example for the Town’s young lacrosse players, who can one day aspire to further their education through athletics. The sentiment was echoed by Massapequa Lacrosse Club President John Kirby. “These Division III programs offer youngsters excellent academic and athletic opportunities,” Kirby said. “The Town should be commended for supporting this event, which not only provides a healthy outlet for participants, but advances worthwhile charitable endeavors.” Kirby also praised the Town of Oyster Bay’s outstanding parks and facilities. “It’s no secret in the local sports community that the Town’s fields are among the finest in the nation,” Kirby said. “The fact that Gettysburg and Cortland are playing on them is testament to that. In addition to John Burns Park, the Town will allow us to use the ‘Field of Dreams’ in Massapequa for the Supervisor’s Cup in June. Both facilities are outstanding and will go a long way in making our event successful.” Last year, the Supervisor’s Cup All-Star Lacrosse Tournament raised over $153,000 for JDRF. This year the Massapequa Lacrosse Club and JDRF have teamed up with the Long Island Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to add an additional emphasis on the charity and goodwill of the lacrosse community. “Our mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and Hodgkin’s disease and, until we find a cure, to improve the quality of life of patients and their families,” explained Katie Stockhammer, campaign director of the Long Island Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. “I’m so grateful to the Town of Oyster Bay and the Massapequa Lacrosse Club for hosting this most worthwhile event, which allows connect with the lacrosse community and provides a visible platform for us to build awareness about our important cause.” Supervisor Venditto said he is looking forward to the College Lacrosse North South Showdown on March 7 and is equally enthusiastic about the 4th Annual Supervisor’s Cup All-Star Lacrosse Tournament on June 5, 6 & 7. “They are two outstanding events and I’m proud to be hosting them here in the Town of Oyster Bay,” the supervisor said. “Any team or coach interested in being a part of this special tournament and helping find a cure for diabetes and blood cancers are encouraged to contact John Lynott, chairman of the Town of Oyster Bay Lacrosse League and board member of the Massapequa Lacrosse Club, via e-mail Johnl54aol.com or phone at 732-0738.
