John Logan, director of veterans services for the town, wants to remind the general public that the members of the American Legion Post 14
and Manson H. Carter Post 2498 Veterans of Foreign Wars will place flags on the graves of veterans in order to honor them on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. The American Legion and Boy Scouts Troop 13 placed the flags in the Needham Cemetery on May 18, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars placed flags in the St. Mary’s Cemetery on May 20. The flags are placed on those veterans’ graves that have a bronze veteran marker or a U.S. flag holder. Anyone aware of a veteran’s grave that does not have a U.S. flag and holder may obtain one free of charge at the Veterans Services Office in Needham Town Hall. In case a veteran’s grave is inadvertently omitted, call Veterans Services at 781-455-7532, prior to Memorial Day. 6:50 a.m. – Mass for deceased veterans at St. Joseph Church. 8:15 a.m. – Services at the police and fire stations at Chestnut and School streets. 9 a.m. – Brief ceremony and the placing of a wreath and the raising of the flag at St. Mary’s Cemetery. 9:45 a.m. – Flag-raising ceremony and placing a wreath at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Sunset and Cefalo roads.
10:30 a.m. – Flag-raising ceremony and the placing of a wreath at Needham Cemetery. “Taps” will be played as part of traditional ceremonies.
