May 22, 2009 “Last year, after these events, we received a number of phone calls and e-mails from neighbors concerned about these events and
their impact on the neighborhoods,†First Selectman Evonne Klein said. “And that neighbors were excluded from the process.†The memorial walk, in its second year, honors JR Schoen, a 9-year-old Darien boy that had a brain tumor and died last July. The walk, which includes a minimum donation of $25, last year featured many Darien children for the 1-mile trek around Long Neck Point. The walk aims to remember this lively young boy throughout the years ahead. The event begins at 10:15, with registration opening at 9:30, at Pear Tree Point Beach. Kimberly Servas, chairman of the organizing committee, said that last year they raised $15,000 for Darien EMS — Post 53 and the Playground by the Sound. This year Servas said they are going to put the community charity for donations out to the public. Residents are encouraged to suggest local charities that would benefit from the money raised. Klein said that most of the complaints involved leftover debris and trash once the walk was over. “I would recommend that there is a clean-up committee and they take a look at the neighborhood when everything is done,†Klein added.â€
