• Roxanne Olsson, a 17-year-old student at Century High School, was named the third place senior prize winner in The Humane Education Network’s “A
Voice for Animals” high school essay contest. Olsson was awarded $400 for her paper, “The Voice of the Macaw,” which examines the borderline extinction of the Central and South American wild macaw, due in part to habitat destruction and elusive bird trade practices. The Hilhi Fun Night Auction, Bingo and Cakewalk will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Hillsboro High School. The event will feature $5 pizza and drink and the auction will have, among other things, hotel packages, restaurant packages, spa packages, and an autographed (current roster) Portland Trail Blazers basketball. Donations will be accepted and all proceeds go to the Class of 2010 prom expenses. Club Tan and Forever Young are hosting a Red Carpet charity event from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 3, at the Tanasbourne Club Tan and Forever Young Laser Medical Spa, 1991 NW 185th Ave., Hillsboro. All proceeds will go to “A Hope for Autism,” a local nonprofit that offers answers and hope for families and children affected by autism spectrum disorder. Glencoe High School’s Spring Plant Sale will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, May 4-8, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the high school greenhouse, and will also be available at the Hillsboro Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in downtown Hillsboro.
