Oxfam TowerRun 2023

Run for a world without poverty!

Nelson Mandela, an icon of social justice and democracy once said, “Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.” Oxfam has the same belief. With the different programs that they have globally, they’re working towards having a world without poverty – “a world where all people are valued and treated equally, and can lead dignified lives.” Now who wouldn’t want to live in world like that?

On October 22, the annual Oxfam TowerRun, will happen at the tallest building in Macau, the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre. Now in its 10th year, Oxfam aims to raise funds through this event to help vulnerable groups across the world to get access to clean water.

The Oxfam TowerRun, which takes place annually at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre – the tallest building in the city, is a fundraising sports event that Oxfam in Macau has organised since 2014; this year marks the event’s 10th anniversary. Participants will take up the challenge of running up 1,298 steps from the ground floor of the tower to the adventure deck on the 61st floor. It takes about 20 minutes to complete the Oxfam TowerRun. That is equivalent to the time it takes for a herder in Qinghai – now impacted by climate change – to find water. And those experiencing drought in East Africa need to walk four times longer than this to fetch water.

The event includes individual and team relay challenges. Upon raising the minimum donation amount, participants can take part in the individual challenge, or join the team relay through their company or organisation. Not only can participants enjoy this exciting challenge, they can also raise funds to enable vulnerable communities around the world to become more self-reliant and improve their livelihoods.

This year, Hou Chon Sports Club/ Basketball team, Lululemon, and Life Project – our event’s Supporting and Fitness Partners – will provide pre-race fitness and running skills training to participants and the general public.

It won’t take much for you to be able to help the people in East Africa and Qinghai get access to clean water. Imagine how much better their lives will be if you decide to run up those 1,298 steps. So what are you waiting for? Lace up those shoelaces and click here to register!
