Pelicans avenge Opening Day loss

D.C.
Reeves • dcreevespnj.com • May 16, 2009 The Pensacola Pelicans donned purple jerseys. Renowned local attorney Fred Levin signed a one-day contract with the team, dropping a spacious office for a seat in the dugout. Call it luck, but it looks like the Pelicans had a good thing going. Bouncing back from an opening day defeat, Pensacola topped Shreveport-Bossier 7-4 at Pelican Park at UWF on Friday night. The Pelicans scored three runs in the seventh inning and added two more in the eighth to earn their first win of the season. “We got the timely hits and things were falling our way,” manager Talmadge Nunnari said. “I thought the game was fun. We were executing much more in this game than (Thursday).” As for Levin, he won an auction at the Autism Society of the Panhandle’s annual banquet last month which allowed him to be signed by the Pelicans. The team hoped that Levin could actually play during the game but the American Association squashed that idea, making Levin an honorary coach.
“I enjoy just being around this,” said Levin, who wore the full baseball uniform including a purple No. 17 jersey. “(Team owner) Quint (Studer) and I talked about it, and we thought that this would give great PR and awareness to autism. And anytime they can mention my name, heck yes, I’ll do it.”
