The power of you ™ For thousands of the neediest children throughout the United States, one such sad event some 27 years ago paved the way for their lives to dramatically improve. In 1982, Bruton Smith founded – an organization that helps children in need with educational, financial, medical and social needs in the Concord/Charlotte community as well as in communities surrounding some of the other motor speedways across the country. The organization’s birth came as a memorial and tribute to the life of Smith’s young son, Bruton Cameron Smith, who died at an early age. Since then, the chairman of Speedway Motorsports has seen Speedway Children’s Charities grow to help many hundreds of nonprofits and thousands of children in need. This week’s races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway will help the organization continue with their mission. “We provide the platform for Speedway Children’s Charities to get out and create dynamic events that help them raise money for great causes,†said Scott Cooper with Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The races that have already taken place last week in Concord, coupled with the events still to come at the speedway, bring in the big crowds Speedway Children’s Charities needs. “So that’s the beauty of the partnership that they have with the raceways is that we are doing things and promoting things that bring in lots of people. Then, they can utilize us to get their message in front of those people who learn about all the good things that Speedway Children’s Charities are doing and that’s going to drive donations to them so they can help out some great causes,†added Cooper. Last weekend, volunteers with Speedway Children’s Charities were out in force along the row of drivers’ merchandise trailers, reaching out to the crowds about the latest way they can help make a difference – bidding to win a brand-new motorcycle. On Wednesday, the nonprofit will be holding their , and on the Sunday morning of the Coca-Cola 600, a track walk will be held where donors can put their feet on the pavement that will shortly after play host to the 50th running of the biggest event Lowe’s Motor Speedway has to offer.
These donations, in turn, quickly make their way out to hundreds of needy organizations around the Charlotte region. With many nonprofits facing a serious economic moment of truth, these funds couldn’t come at a better time.
