Former heavyweight boxing champ and Prince George’s County resident Riddick Bowe still has designs on another belt around his waist.
Yeas & Nays caught up with the 41-year-old Bowe at the U.S. Capitol Reflecting Pool on Sunday, and asked him who he thought the next champ to come out of the D.C. area would be. “You’re looking at him,” responded the 1988 Olympic silver medalist and short-lived Marine trainee. He said he was shopping for a fight he’s “just got to get my swagger back and drop a couple pounds.” Bowe was out to show his support at an event put on by the Soles for Souls charity and students from Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, Va. They collected thousands of pairs of shoes, each representing 100 people killed in Darfur. “I was wondering if I came out with no shoes if they’d give me a pair,” joked Bowe, who also made sure the crowd knew he was a “two-time” champion, not just a “champion,” as the student who introduced him said. Also appearing: Miss Africa USA Nyasha Zimucha, a native of South Africa. “There are a few leaders [in Africa] who have manipulated the system and who, quite frankly, have been in power for too long,” she said.
