Rise Against Hunger

Rise against hunger, rise above meaninglessness.

The image we usually have of a volunteer is one who sacrifices his time, money and abilities in the service of others without getting anything in return. Just a pure unadulterated form of altruism.

The more utilitarian-minded of us though can’t help but ask: are there some benefits to being a volunteer albeit in non-monetary terms? Apparently, the benefits are huge. According to Healthdirect, being a volunteer has lots of benefits:

It can bring meaning and purpose to your life, while increasing your self-esteem and wellbeing. Volunteering can also relieve stress, and alleviate symptoms of depression. As well as having a positive impact on your community, volunteering can improve your relationships.

So, start engaging in some volunteer work this year. Better yet, come and join Rise Against Hunger (RAH), a global movement fighting poverty. If you’re in Birmingham, the non-profit youth organization, YouthServe, is organizing a Rise Against Hunger event at Canterbury United Methodist Church. The event is taking place on February 12, 2023.

Volunteers are the heart of the RAH mission to end hunger and they could not send millions of meals around the globe each year without them. They need 150 volunteers, so school groups are welcome to volunteer together – a rare opportunity!
