Runners Rally At Mount Madonna 2009: Bill Flodberg

Runners rally at Mount Madonna

Bill Flodberg, the renowned running enthusiast who coached cross country and organized local jogging clubs and races for charity, was honored by South Valley
Running Club before the start of the event. Flodberg died in March after being struck by a car near his home in San Martin. Race director Allan Abrams tabbed the turnout at Mount Madonna County Park an unofficial record. “It was fantastic, beyond expectation,” said Abrams, who earlier this month predicted around 150 runners would show up. “I’ve been organizing this race for three years, and it’s definitely the most I’ve seen or any (SVRC members) have seen in our years of doing this.” Saturday SVRC also announced that the Mount Madonna Challenge, South Valley’s only trail event, will be renamed in honor of Flodberg. It comprises three races, with awards going to the top male and female finishers in each age group plus the overall winners. Justin Daulton finished first in the 18K in one hour, 22 minutes, 15 seconds, and Erika Kikuchi won the women’s title in 1:44:42. John Burton (57:10) and Ellen Washburn (1:09:12) outkicked the field in the 12K, and Cesar Acosta (26:26) and Madison Lindsey (30:38) were tops in the 6K. 34th annual Mount Madonna Challenge top finishers
