Honors: The Madison DX Club, an amateur radio group that specializes in international communications, recently named Doug Spears of Janesville the Ham-In-Action for 2008.
The award recognizes international contacts, first-time contacts in individual countries, sharing information with other ham operators, upgrading radio station equipment and promoting club functions. Spears’ radio station call is W9PN. Kara Grajkowski, of Madison, has been named one of 50 finalists nationwide in the 2009 Build-A-Bear Workshop Huggable Heroes community service program. Kara writes, markets and sells books to raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. Of of 50 finalists, 12 Huggable Heroes will be selected to win scholarships and donations to the charity of their choice. Adopt-A-School: Students and staff of Madison’s Muir Elementary School celebrated their “adoption” by CUNA Mutual Group on Thursday. Their partnership is part of a Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools program &mdash initially underwritten by CUNA Mutual &mdash to provide human, material and financial resources. Muir’s adoption is the 20th such partnership in the Madison district. Derick Stace-Naughton, a sophomore at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., has been named a Baker Scholar, which recognizes academic strength and dedication to service. He was also the first fellow appointed to the university’s Program on Science in the Public Interest, which provides students direct contact with Congress. Both students are the children of Pat and Denise Stace-Naughton and grandchildren of Ralph and Nell Stace, all of Madison. Ansel Norris, a Madison East student, recently won first place in the high school division of the National Trumpet Competition held at George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. The award is a scholarship to Michigan’s summer Interlochen Arts Camp. Ansel also won a $10,000 scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Ansel is a member of the East High bands, the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra and Winds of Wisconsin. The Madison Central High School Class of 1964 will observe its 45th reunion on July 24 and 25. Friday’s gathering will be at VFW Post 1318, 133 E. The DeForest High School Class of 1964 will observe their 45th reunion on Saturday, July 25, from 6 to 10 p.m. The event offers built-in nostalgia as it will be held in the old DeForest High School gym. Class members will meet between 5 and 6 p.m. at Rude’s Lanes, 210 E. Holum, and will walk to the gym for the buffet.
