School Spotlight Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School 2009: Children Belong

School Spotlight Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School

The children belong to the O Ambassadors, a nationwide organization founded by Oprah Winfrey to teach young people to become active global citizens.
The Chula Vista Learning Community Charter School’s chapter is known as The One Love Club. Their second annual event, called the Super Big Give Charity Festival, was held at the school and featured activities for everyone, including live music, carnival games, a beauty spa and silent auction. All proceeds will be sent, via O Ambassadors, to help construct schools in the village of Domeabra, on the Ashanti coast of Ghana, Africa. Last year’s event raised more than $6,000. The village of Domeabra has already benefited from a primary school built with funds from O Ambassadors around the United States and Canada. A secondary facility with four classrooms for 160 teens ages 14-18 is now being built. Desks, chairs, blackboards and textbooks will also be purchased. In Ghana, 46 percent of the population is illiterate, while only 54 percent of primary-school-aged children attend schools. About 40 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. – DAVID BERLIN
