EVENTS Children and teens can learn crew rowing this summer during a free program that teaches rowing as well as reading improvement.
The deadline to sign up is today. The program, put on by the Bayou Rowing Association, honors the late Ohio Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, who held a passion for helping youths improve their reading skills. Spots on rowing teams are open to boys and girls ages 12-17. No experience is necessary. Participation is free. Crew starts June 8. The program includes two racing sessions a week at the Bayou Rowing Association boatyard in Thibodaux on La. 308 at Greenwood Plantation Road. Entry fees are $30 per team. The event benefits Madison Boudreaux, daughter of Jamie and Jaime Boudreaux. Madison has osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. Book sales are underway at the Choctaw, Raceland, South Lafourche and Thibodaux library branches. The Friends of the Golden Meadow Library will hold a book sale Monday-May 15 at the Golden Meadow Branch Library, 1403 N. Bayou Drive. The Friends of the Larose Library will hold a book sale, “Bag of Books for a Buck,” on May 15. Larose library visitors can fill a grocery bag with books for $1. Friends of the Library fundraiser proceeds often help supply library branches with arts-and-crafts materials, magazine subscriptions, new DVDs and more.
The Wii Can Do It Group for senior citizens participates in low-impact exercise using the Nintendo Wii gaming system from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays at the Terrebonne Parish Main Library, 151 Library Drive, Houma, and at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and Saturday at the Mobile Library parked at the Grand Caillou Gym in Dulac. Bowling and golf are available. Water is provided.
