Special To The Daily JournalMessenger 2009: Fourth Weekend

Special to the Daily JournalMessenger

But during the fourth weekend in August, the field transforms into a party paradise, equipped with family-friendly activities, groovy tunes and plenty of happy
guests. And for the 29th year, the organizers of the event will welcome their Spittoono family with open arms for a 3-day stream of entertainment and fun. Justin Rakey, promotions director for the annual event, has looked back on the years of Spittoono planning and is always amazed at how much it grows each year. “This literally started after a bunch of guys, now known as the Redneck Performing Arts Association, wanted to put on a festival and give back to the community,†he said. “Nearly 30 years later, we’re giving back thousands of dollars to local charities in need. It’s awesome.†Tonight, a good mix of bluegrass will start things off, as families are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blankets, pets and their appetites while they relax and soak up the entertainment. For Friday, rock fans had better bring their energy because Stone Echo, Conservation Theory, The Deadly Crank Dogs, Mudfish and others will be ending the night with a bang. Saturday is usually country day, Rakey added.
“For each night, the music and fun will start at 6 p.m. and run until 2 a.m.,†he said. “As always, the festival admission is free. If families want to come and just watch the music, that’s fine with us.â€
