Joy Nocek • Reader Submitted • August 27, 2009 In a special effort to join the battle against childhood cancer, Spotlight Players community theater
in Matawan hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand at it’s Friday, August 7, 2009 production of “Once On This Island,” directed by Cliff Greene. With the assistance of Karen Salerno from Holmdel (a passionate supporter of the ALSF), and the generous donation of lemonade & other refreshments from Matawan’s Lloyd Road Stop & Shop, everyone enjoyed a great production of the musical Caribbean tale “Once On This Island” and generously donated to this important cause (while sipping on some wonderful lemonade). Thanks to all that attended and supported this important event! Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra “Alex” Scott (1996-2004). At the age of 4, Alex announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of volunteers across the country carrying on her legacy of hope. Spotlight Players is a community theater with the following goal: to entertain, educate, and enrich. We provide entertaining theater to local audiences, enhancing our area’s cultural appeal with shows that are moving, thought-provoking, and just plain fun. Currently all of our productions take place at the First Presbyterian Church of Matawan on Route 34 & Franklin Street. Spotlight Players is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. We are a proud member of the Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce and the Monmouth County Arts Council.
