Steve Nyland Was Pleased To Present The Cheque To AECC Committee 2009: Christmas Returned

Steve Nyland was pleased to present the cheque to AECC Committee

Christmas returned to the Costa Blanca once again, in the form of a very special delivery for the AECC.
Whilst Christmas is a busy time for all of us, it has become even more hectic for talented Athlete Steve Nyland, who for the past two years has dedicated the festive season to coordinating the country’s biggest Santa Fun Run. Participants are required to dress from head to toe in Santa suits, from the characteristic red bobble hat to the clumpy black boots, then make a 5km trek through Torrevieja, from the ‘Hombre del Mar’ statue, near to the Avenida Libertad, then continuing on along the Paseo as far as the Playa de los Locos, before returning to the start point. This is no easy feat in the weighty suits, particularly when the sun is belting down as it has done on each occasion. However, whilst labelled a Fun Run, the emphasis has always been on the FUN element, with everyone competing at their own pace and running certainly not essential. Aside from the fun, is the most important factor and the reason why the event takes place- to raise as much money as possible for the ‘Asociacion Española Contra el Cancer’ (AECC) The Santa Fun Run proved extremely popular in its first year, when 200 applicants pledged their support to the event, raising a tremendous total of 14, 586 euros. The latest edition welcomed an equally positive turn-out, and an increased number of business teams, infants and even toddlers who were rallied around the course in pushchairs festooned with Christmas decorations. The number of non- British participants and those from the north of the Province was also significantly increased, which is a trend which Steve would like to see continuing in the future. WORLD TRANSPLANT GAMES Steve is already thinking ahead to this year’s Fun Run, which he envisages will follow a similar format, only bigger and better than the previous two. Meanwhile, Steve claimed two silver medals, for the 5 km cycle time trail, and the 10 km road race, in the British Transplant Games of 2008, which teamed with his being British Champion during 2007, guaranteed him a place with the Great British team for the World Transplant Games, which take place in Australia during mid-August of this year.
