It’s Edison vs.
Marina week. They are tied for first place in the fabulously entertaining Sunset League, with 8-1 league records. Edison was undefeated in league after sophomore Henry Owens pitched a no-hitter against Fountain Valley on Wednesday. Then Fountain Valley gave Edison its first Sunset loss Friday, 5-4, for Fountain Valley’s second league victory. Marina’s league loss was to Edison, 4-3, on March 27 in the first go-around of Sunset games before the spring break tournaments. Some might have reacted with a “wow” when Fountain Valley beat Edison on Friday. But not Marina coach Paul Renfrow. “This is my 26th year coaching in the Sunset League,” Renfrow said. “All during that time, nobody’s ever gone undefeated.” Last year’s Sunset champion was Los Alamitos, which went 13-2 in league. Los Alamitos is 3-6 in league now, and last week was swept in a two-game series against Esperanza, which also is 3-6 as is Newport Harbor. Just the week before, Esperanza won three of its four games in the Anderson Bat National Classic, with victories there over nationally ranked Archbishop Mitty of San Jose and Palm Beach Central of Wellington, Fla., and a one-run loss to nationally ranked Mater Dei.
The scheduled starting pitchers for Wednesday’s Edison-at-Marina game are Owens (6-0 record) for Edison and senior Race Parmenter (5-0) for Marina. On Friday, the projected starters are Edison senior Kurt Heyer (6-1) and Marina senior Paul Strong (5-1), a UC Irvine signee.
