OCEAN PINES — The Ocean Pines Tennis Association has held its championship.
I was only able to attend the very exciting women’s double finals, held Aug. 9. Despite incredibly hot temperatures, the women played a very energetic match, with Wendy Harrison and Mary Ann Oster defeating Nancy Behning and Marie Lunczynski. Rick Lang and Alice Seyfert won the mixed doubles. The men’s doubles match was won by Dale Ash and Mike Foebler. The fall OPPTA tournament is scheduled for Oct. 3 — mark your calendars. Details will be forthcoming later in the month. If you are interested in helping with the tournament, contact the Wheatleys at . Although I did report the winners for the OPMGA Senior tournament held July 11, I did not realize that the winner, Jerry Peake, was the oldest person to ever win that tournament. Way to go, Jerry! There was no regular men’s golf on Thursday. The OPLGA-9 played Chairmen’s Choice Tuesday, Aug. 11, which was a step out scramble with a shotgun start. In first place, with a score of 39, was the team of new member Natalie Fenwick, chairwoman Betty Holloway and Laura Thomson. Eileen Andersen, Sally Stafford and Janet Stoer came in second place with a score of 42. Most of the very hot, shower-needing players retired to the Yacht Club for fun and liquid libations. The WPGA-18 (Women’s Peninsula Golf Association) held their tournament at OPG&CC. Fifty-two women from eight clubs played the better ball of two. From OPG&CC, Carol Menton and Carolyn Neal tied Chung Cho and Debbie Schwertner as the winners of low gross. Following the event, the group had a delicious lunch upstairs at the club. Once again, do not forget that the BOGG scramble previously scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13 has moved to Sunday, Sept. 27. More information will be forthcoming closer the event.
There will be a charity golf tournament to benefit prostate cancer at the Ocean City Golf & Yacht Club on the Newport Bay Course. It will be held Sept. 9 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The awards ceremony and a buffet dinner will follow golf. The cost is $75 per player, $65 for members. Make checks payable to OCGYC. Proceeds will benfit Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The format will be a Florida scramble (two scores per team), with a net and gross winner. It is open to men and women.
