The blistering heat beats his body, sending sweat streaming toward the ancient trail. As he descends into an agricultural valley, a herd of cows crossing the road abruptly brings Bill Higgins to a halt as he races to complete the Great Wall of China Marathon. And they didn’t.
Higgins finished the 2001 China race, and it’s now logged in his journal as one of 70 marathons he has completed on six of the seven continents over the past 31 years.
