Tigard, Alberta Rider students win regional math competition TIGARD — Charles F. Tigard Elementary won first place in the 2009 Math is Cool Championship held at Ft. Vancouver High on April 17. In addition, Pavithra Rao and Carmen-Ioana Ursachi, both Alberta Rider Elementary students, placed first and second respectively, in the competition. During the contest, the students competed in free-response individual tests, free-response and multiple-choice team tests, relays, mental math tests and a college bowl event. Thousands of students from Washington and the Vancouver/Portland area participated in the competition this year. TUALATIN — The Tualatin High School Choir will be hosting a free Talent/Variety Show at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20 in the Tualatin High School auditorium. Members of the high school’s five choirs will perform a wide variety of music. In addition, students will perform solos, duets and small group pieces, some accompanied by professional accompanists or students on piano or guitar. TUALATIN — Two performances remain in the Tualatin High School Thespians’ 16th-annual Tournament of One-Act Plays, during which the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes put on different one-act plays and ask the audience to vote on their favorite. The plays are both written and directed by students. The shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14 (tonight) and Friday, May 15. Admission costs $7 for adults, $6 for students, and $5 for senior citizens. Call the TuHS Arts Hotline at 503-431-5707 for more information. TIGARD — The Tigard High Band will hold a Hot Jazz and Cool Desserts concert on May 17 to raise money for the high school’s music programs. The THS Jazz Ensemble will open for the Tony Pacini Trio starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased by calling 503-431-3532 or at the door on Sunday night. In addition, the THS Band Boosters will hold a silent auction where weekend getaways to the Oregon coast, a hot air balloon ride for two, a personal three-hour sailboat cruise on the Columbia River and more will be up for sale.
