Another offseason of Brett Favre coming out of retirement talk is in full swing, but Titans quarterback Kerry Collins can understand where the future
Hall of Famer is coming from. “I am not surprised,’’ Collins said Tuesday. “He loves to play the game, loves to be around the game. It is hard for all us to not have it, to not be a part of it. I certainly understand his desire to play as long as he wants. And I think he has earned that right.’’ Favre, the longtime Packers quarterback, announced his retirement last offseason then ended up playing for the Jets, throwing 22 touchdown passes and 22 interceptions for a team that missed the playoffs. When the Jets released Favre in April, he indicated he had no plans to return to football. Now he’s been linked to the Vikings, and is throwing passes again, presumably getting ready for a comeback. The Vikings say they’re interested. So is Favre in danger of damaging his legacy if he comes back yet again, and fails “Maybe short term,’’ Collins said. “But long-term, people will realize he is one of the top three quarterbacks ever to play the game.’’ As for Collins, retirement is far from his mind. He signed a two-year contract in March. “I feel rejuvenated, bottom line,’’ said Collins, who’ll turn 37 in December. “And coming into my 15th year I realize I don’t have forever. But physically I feel really good.’’
New game: The locker room resembled a tailgate party as players enjoyed a gift from Cortland Finnegan. The cornerback purchased a “Cornhole” game at a charity event recently and brought it to the locker room. For those not familiar with the game, players take turns tossing beanbags at a hole in the far end of a raised platform. “I was going to take it home,” Finnegan said, “but I thought why take it home when we can have fun with it” The game drew a big crowd and was especially popular with the defensive backs. Many players said quarterback Patrick Ramsey was one of the best Cornhole combatants. Collins, however, wasn’t among the participants. The game was too close to his locker. “I want no piece of it,’’ he said. “The only sport I am playing today that involves a hole is golf. They can play that all day. &hellip It is the first day and I am about tired of it already, all the yelling and screaming and stuff.’’ Deep throws: The Titans spent a lot of time Tuesday working on deep passes, with Collins, Vince Young and Ramsey taking their shots. One of the best completions was a 45-yarder from Collins to newcomer Nate Washington, who took it in for a touchdown. “He’ll get a sense of timing for his speed, when to let the go-route go and those kinds of things, how quick he is out of the break,’’ Fisher said of the Collins-Washington chemistry. “That was the nature of today’s work, to give them a chance in a competitive situation to work on the timing.’’ Held out: Defensive end Jevon Kearse (knee), center Kevin Mawae (elbow) and defensive end Ulrich Winkler (knee) did not participate in Tuesday’s workouts because of their injuries.
