Upland pet rescue charity hopes to save lives this weekend

The Chihuahua-terrier mix has a chance to charm visitors of the Pet Adoption Faire in Memorial Park for the second year in a row.
“His brother got adopted and he didn’t, so this is pet fair No. 2 for him,” said Margaret Coffman, president of Helping Out Pets Everyday, the Upland-based rescue charity hosting the fair for the 10th year. Finley will be one of a large group of rescued dogs, as well as dogs currently staying at the Upland Animal Shelter, up for adoption during the fair. “I can’t believe 10 years has gone by. We’re going to celebrate it in a big way because right across the park is the new shelter that’s going to be built,” Coffman said. The new Upland Animal Services Shelter is still being built in Memorial Park and is expected to be able to house more animals than the current shelter on 15th Street. “We’re just looking for a lot of adoptions that day because the shelter is full right now,” Coffman said. “So we’re trying and I hope they don’t have to put anybody down before next week, so that is the urgency right now.” Helping Out Pets Everyday will pay the $25 adoption fee for every cat that is adopted, as long as the owner pays to have the cat spayed or neutered. Dry Dock Depot in Upland will pay the $35 adoption fee for the first 10 dogs adopted.
