Last week the Freddie Thomas senior became only the sixth boy, and first in 16 years, to crack the 2,000-point mark. Dukes, a guard who has averaged about 23 per game in each of his four seasons, has 2,108 points. That’s fifth all-time, ahead of Angelica’s Bill Young (2,006). Three area girls soccer players &mdash Jessica Herbst (Webster Schroeder), Bethany Kwarta (Pittsford Sutherland) and Shannon Spusta (Palmyra-Macedon) &mdash recently signed to play next fall for the University of Vermont. Two former Section V standouts &mdash Honeoye’s Rachel Andres and Churchville-Chili’s Emilie Rowe &mdash played last fall for the Catamounts. Hoops at Mercy Some contenders for Section V crowns in the upcoming girls basketball tournaments will be tested in Sunday’s Private-Parochial League Valentine’s Classic at Mercy. All ticket proceeds from the charity event go to the Rochester chapter of the Ronald McDonald House. A junior-varsity tournament with the same teams is Saturday at Aquinas. Vyverberg is in his 22nd season at McQuaid, which will play its first Section V Tournament game at 8 p.m. on Feb. 21 at Genesee Valley Ice Rink. Former Irondequoit coach Al Maerz has the Section V record with 303.
