Six years ago when Anna Hanback was undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for breast cancer, she decided to raise money for the Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. So she organized a bake sale at the Virginia House of Delegates, where she works as the human resource director. The first event raised $500. The next year she added a silent auction. Each year the event grew. This year’s fundraiser, which involved a bake sale, silent auction and a Valentine’s Day decoration contest of delegates’ and staff offices, has netted $6,914 so far. “Because it’s my thing it’s been interesting to watch,” Hanback said. “I’m six years out of having cancer and people are still handing me money!” Decorated offices included Del. Joe Morrissey’s whose “Fighting Joe Fights for the Cure” theme included “Rockem’ Sockem'” games for donors to play. Employees and visitors voted with dollars for the best decorations. The House Information Systems’ decorations won with its theme of “Go Green for Valentine’s Day — Love Our Planet — Renew. Reuse, Recycle.”
“My goal this year was to raise $6,000 to $8,000, so if I get to $7,000 I’ll be right in the middle,” Hanback said.
