Outhay Glass was a dirty girl.
After a bout of filthy volleyball, she had mud in her ears, on her arms and all over her tank top, which read, “Knockout.” Glass, the area promotions manager for Hooters restaurants, was one of nearly 200 folks who came out to play mud volleyball Saturday at Iroquois Park to raise money for The March of Dimes Ohio Valley Division. About 20 teams, some made up of friends and some of coworkers at local businesses such as UPS and Renaissance Medical, paid entry fees to spike, set and slide around in the mushy ground on a gorgeous, cool morning in the park. “It’s something outside the norm of charity events,” Glass said. “I wish it would rain for us.” Five regional Hooters restaurants provided the munchies for the event &mdash as well as a hot halftime show featuring uniformed Hooters waitresses playing volleyball in the mud. The unconventional fundraiser was inspired by the success of similar March of Dimes events in Colorado and Florida.
Lisa Echsner, Kentucky’s March of Dimes state director, said a recent mud volleyball event in Colorado raised about $200,000 for the organization’s programs to fight premature births, infant deaths and birth defects.
