Manchester Man Sets Record For Largest Cupcake 2009: Manchesters Ryan

Manchester man sets record for largest cupcake

Manchester’s Ryan Abood has a sweet new designation in the Guinness Book of World Records: baker of the world’s largest cupcake.
Abood, owner of Gourtmetgiftbaskets.com, presented his colossal confection yesterday at the Woodward Dream Cruise classic-cars event in Royal Oak, Mich. Guinness representative Carl Saville was on hand to inspect the cupcake as it was unveiled and lowered by forklift onto a floor scale, where it was measured at 1,224 pounds, easily exceeding the 151-pound mark established a month earlier by a Minnesota company, Cakes.com. Saville’s criteria: that the cupcake be edible, cooked throughout and resemble a cupcake. After passing all three tests, Abood’s triple vanilla creation — 4 feet tall and 10 feet wide — was served to the Dream Cruise crowd in exchange for small donations to the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure charity. Abood estimated that the 2-million-calorie cupcake could serve 10,000 people. After an attempt at baking a 7,000-pound cupcake failed on Friday — the $10,000 worth of groceries turned to liquid — Abood and his crew of 30 scaled back to using about 200 pounds of flour, 200 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of butter and oil and 1,000 eggs and slid the new concoction into a specially designed 8-foot-by-8-foot oven. After about 8 1/2 hours of cooking time, Abood had his record-setter.
“If we had another day, we almost certainly would have had a 7,000-pound cupcake,” he said in a phone interview last night. “Still though, this is incredible. People are taking pictures in front of it, and it’s all for a good cause.”
