May 1, 2009 For real hustle-and-bustle entertainment, be sure to attend the 2nd Annual April Aftershock charity basketball event.
This Saturday sports affair was organized for the first time last year to get the youth within the community involved so there was less likelihood that they would commit offenses in their community. This year’s basketball game will have additional meaning as it will pay tribute to the late Coaches Steve Hodson, Paul Williamson and Tom Cardon, who all died within three months from cancer. All three coaches’ legacy of unrelenting perseverance and playing fair is being perpetuated with two basketball games comprised of two adult teams – adult law enforcement vs. Juvenile justice services staff – and two youth teams – Tragedy, youth outreach vs. Iron County All-Stars, senior high school students from the Iron County School District. To set the tone with high energy will be Southern Utah’s own “American Idol” contestant, Taylor Vaifanua. She will sing the National Anthem that will be followed intermittently during the games by the musical talent of DJ Spinz. There will be prize drawings, concessions and even more entertainment by Vaifanua at half-time that will also feature a brief tribute reading by former players of each coach. The games will be played at Canyon View High School, 166 W. 1925 North. The adult game starts at noon and the main event with the students begins at 2 p.m. There will be a spirit competition so make sure to bring your cow bells and megaphones to cheer on your favorite teams. No one who wants to attend will be turned away but there is a suggested donation of $2 per student, $3 for adults and $8 for a family of four for admission. All proceeds will be donated to the Sandra L. Maxwell, IHC-Hunstman Cancer Center on the campus of Valley View Medical Center to help local cancer patients. PAROWAN CHOIR PERFORMS
Another event not to miss is the Parowan Community Choir’s spring concert, “America: The Dream Goes On.” The Sunday performance begins at 7 p.m. in the 3rd and 4th ward building on Parowan’s Main Street. The program is under the direction of Jay Wilcken and accompanied by Carla Green. It will consist of selections written by American composers or arrangers, such as John Williams, John Darter, Mark Hayes and George M. Cohan.
