While his team prepared to take the court against five hulky Patriots players in a game of basketball, coach Steve Wakelin gave his 15-person
team some useful advice. “Don’t hurt them,” Wakelin told his charges. “We want our Super Bowl this year so we don’t want to hurt anyone.” On Wednesday, April 15, the Green Wave Boosters club hosted a charity basketball game versus members of New England’s favorite football team, and when the final buzzer sounded, the event had brought in more than $10,000 for the boosters. “For one event that’s not bad,” said Kathy Perrone, a member of the boosters. “It was very well attended. Even before the night of the event, we had made a few thousand dollars because of the advanced sales of all of the tickets.” Holding court for the Patriots were Laurence Maroney, Ellis Hobbs, Stephen Gostkowski, Ray Ventrone and Greg Lewis, a new wide receiver on the team who was recently acquired by the Pats from the Philadelphia Eagles. Perrone said the Boosters club scheduled the fundraiser to help cover the cost of next year’s AHS athletics.
“Because of all the cuts, the boosters is responsible for helping JV athletics,” Perrone said. “Without this money they would have only had varsity and cut JV.”
