Five marathons in six days

A former Redruth School student, who is now a professional musician, is gearing up for “the toughest foot-race on earth”.
Mark David, aged 44, is training hard for the Marathon des Sables, which takes place at the end of March and comprises the equivalent of five marathons in just six days. Competitors have to carry everything they need for the event, apart from a tent, in a rucksack &ndash that is food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag, etc. Water is rationed and handed out at checkpoints and mid-day temperatures approach 120 degrees F. The terrain ranges from uneven rocky and stony ground to huge sand dunes. Mark grew up in the Redruth area and played in Carharrack and St Day Silver Band. He went to Birmingham School of Music and the National Centre for Orchestral Studies, and is lead trumpet player with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
