School notes

Kindergarten orientation is scheduled from 6-7:30 p.m.
March 5 in the library at Avoca West Elementary School, 235 Beech Drive, Glenview. Parents must provide proof of residency (a copy of tax bill, lease, or bill of sale) and a copy of the child’s birth certificate or passport in order to receive a registration packet. Children entering kindergarten in the fall must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2009. The district encourages anyone who knows of any new families in the district with children of kindergarten age to ask them to call the Avoca West Elementary School office. The evening is intended for parents only and no children. Contact Mary Herlinger, (847) 724-6800. • The Marie Murphy School boys varsity and junior varsity basketball teams both experienced first-place wins this season. The junior varsity team won first place against seven other teams in the North Shore Independent Conference and also came in first place in the conference tournament, for a record of 18 wins and only one loss this season. Sixth- and seventh-grade junior varsity team members include: William Challenger, Mitchell Hill, Daniel Katz, Michael Knippen, Petar Lazic, Jacob Manchester, Michael Riordan, Justin Savin, Christian Schroeder, Fotis Vasiliadis, Samuel Visconti and Anthony Volchek. The junior varsity team was coached by Stuart Spiegel. The boys’ varsity team finished second against seven other teams in the regular season and came in first place in the conference tournament, for a record of 15 wins and four losses. Eighth-grade varsity team members include: Stanislaw Banas, Joseph Harvey, Joshua Katz, Jonathan Lungu, John Manchester, Todd Pearson, Aaron Rosen, Nicholas Santos, Justin Schrimmer, Charlie Shehan, Elton Shiau and Carlos Zambrano. The coach of the varsity team was Chad Henley. Districts 37 and 39 offer a five-week summer enrichment program to children completing kindergarten through seventh grade, from June 22 to July 24. Children may enroll in one, two or three classes. Bus transportation is available and “link-up” bus service is available after the last morning class each day to students enrolled in Wilmette Park District camps. March 6 is the registration deadline until late registration begins March 30 through May 8. A late fee of $25 will be applied after March 30. The catalogue containing descriptions of the courses is available at the Mikaelian Education Center, 615 Locust Road, Wilmette, or at the Wilmette Public Library. The catalogue is also available online at . Kindergarten registration packets for the coming school year are now available. If you or someone you know will have a child entering Central school this fall, stop by the front office to pick up a packet.
• Come for the Teacher Appreciation Party on Friday, March 13 at Tommy Nevin’s Pub in Evanston. Invitations will be sent out soon for this fun occasion, which will include food, drinks and live music.
