17000 to take part in marathon

The Belfast marathon has got under way from the city centre, setting a new record for runners taking part.
More than 17,000 people are participating – 2,000 more than last year. Looking for a hat-trick will be Kenya’s John Mutai, who has won it for the last two years However, the majority are running for fun and charity. The event began at 0900 BST and the runners will finish at Ormeau Park.
While the vast majority of the entrants hail from the British Isles, other countries represented include Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United States, Hungary, Switzerland, Indonesia, Canada, Qatar, the Netherlands and Iceland.
