Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in every 700 babies born worldwide. At first glance, a child with Down syndrome may appear no different from any other, but as they grow older, their unique physical features and intellectual abilities become more apparent. The condition is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, which can result in developmental delays, intellectual disability, and a range of physical and health-related issues. Despite the challenges they face, individuals with Down syndrome are known for their contagious joy, kind-heartedness, and unwavering resilience, inspiring people around the world with their strength and determination.
Fortunately, there are organizations dedicated to supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families. The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is one such organization, committed to improving the lives of people with Down syndrome and advocating for their inclusion in all aspects of society.
One of NDSS’s most prominent initiatives is the Buddy Walk, a national event that aims to promote awareness and acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome. This annual event brings together hundreds of thousands of people to raise funds for advocacy, education, and support programs that benefit the Down syndrome community.
Since 1995, the Buddy Walk® has been the premier advocacy event for Down syndrome in the United States. It is also the world’s most widely recognized public awareness program for the Down syndrome community. The flagship New York City Buddy Walk® attracts participants from coast to coast each year.
