But the clear winner of the Monster Carpathon at Lake Burley Griffin was the 11.76kg carp caught by Peter Migotto, of Weston.
Mr Migotto caught the ”unit”, a little after 8am yesterday. ”It took about 15 minutes to get him in and I thought I’d lost him because it was only a 10-pound line, a real fine, lightweight line,” Mr Migotto said. ”He was caught under a log but I got him out.” Mr Migotto, a keen freshwater fisherman for the past 20 years, was ”very proud”. ”It’s the biggest carp I’ve ever caught and the biggest one I’ve ever seen to be honest,” he said. Ben and Bron Sainsbury, of Hall, took their children, seven-year-old Jake and 18-month-old Hannah, along for the day.
Mr Sainsbury said they caught ”a few carp, some redfin and a hell of a lot that got away”.
