A Royal Success 2009: Royal Delights

A royal success

The Royal Delights Charity Tea raised RM135,000 for the Selangor and Federal Territory Family Planning Association last Sunday.
Though times are bad, many Malaysians came to the Royal Delights Charity Tea party and spent RM135,000 for a good cause. The relatively large amount was attained, thanks to the efforts of Selangor and Federal Territory Family Planning Association’s (SFTFPA) royal patron Tengku Puteri Puan Sri Nor Zehan Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj and her network of do-gooders. “The association approached me to raise money for its operations. It was an honour to do so because my brother, the Sultan of Selangor, had asked me to be patron,” says Tengku Nor Zehan. A flurry of phonecalls and some arm-twisting later, and she had corralled an adhoc committee consisting of friends and family. “It was all through word-of-mouth. Everyone knew someone who could help. We rented out stalls for RM1,000 and RM2,000 inside JW Marriott’s ballroom. It was a fun day out for the family. Entrance was free, and the 28 stalls offered Hari Raya cookies, songket, batik, health products, jewellery and beauty care items at bargain prices,” she says. The royal guests included Tunku Ampuan Besar Negri Sembilan Tengku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud and Raja Puan Besar Perak Tuanku Zara Salim. The wife of the Selangor Menteri Besar Puan Sri Salbiah Tunut showed up, too.
In her welcome speech, Tengku Nor Zehan said, “Instead of the usual fashion or dinner show, I wanted to invite everyone to sample the delights from three kitchens: Delicious, JW Marriott and my own humble kitchen. I am so pleased to have Maria Tunku Sabri from TV3’s Jalan Jalan Cari Makan as the host for the day.”
