The Liverpool Red Balloon – James Bulger House appeal was launched by James’ mother Denise in May last year and it is hoped the centre could be open within 12 months. It was Stuart’s first-ever abseil and he confessed he was nervous before he went “over the edge” of the roof with a 120 foot drop to the ground below. Electrician Stuart, 34, said: “I was not sure what I’d let myself in for when I said I would do it . “But it turned-out to be a real thrill and now I am wondering what the next challenge might be… we are thinking about a parachute jump.” Denise Fergus watched her husband abseil down the building and cheered as he reached the ground. She said: “He’s got my admiration because there is absolutely no way that you would see me doing that! “The good thing is that all the people taking part seemed to be really enjoying themselves and the money raised is going to a cause that is close to my heart. “We have got a lot events line-up now and I’m pleased to say that people are really getting behind the appeal.” Among those joining the abseil was Chris Johnson, who acts as press spokesman for Denise. Johnson, 56, said: “I’ve always wanted to have a go at abseiling but somehow never got round to it. “I was pleasantly surprised that it was not nearly as difficult as I feared it might be and like everyone else I can’t wait to have another go.”
