May 27, 2009: Several reggae, gospel and dancehall artistes are stepping in to help raise money for children living with HIV/AIDS in Jamaica. Nadine Sutherland, Gyptian, Rootz Underground and D’Angel are some of the artists slated to perform at the charity event, MUSIC in the name of LIFE on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre in Kingston. Organizers say they hope to raise $2.5 million for Martha’s House in Central Kingston, operated by the Mustard Seed Communities which suffered a loss of $15 million as a result of a fire on March 16, 2009. In a recent report to the Jamaica Observer, founder Father Gregory Ramkisson highlighted that the children are in need of shoes and clothes as everything was destroyed in the fire. It costs the Mustard Seed Community approximately $20,000 per month to care for a child living with HIV. In some cases, it costs in excess of $30,000 for each child. The concert will raise money to cover the cost of care for ten of the thirty HIV-infected children living at Martha’s House for one year.
