Naples-based Health Management Associations Inc., on Monday reported net income of $46 million, or 19 cents a share, in the quarter ended March 31. For the same quarter a year ago, the company had reported net income of $133.3 million, or 55 cents a share, but those results included a $203.3 million gain on the sale of a 27 percent interest in seven hospitals to Novant Health.
“We are very excited about our results for the first quarter of 2009,” HMA President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Newsome said in a company statement. “As a result of our implementing initiatives in emergency room operations, physician recruitment and service development, we believe the initial traction we witnessed in operating improvements during the fourth quarter of 2008 continued into the first quarter.”
